Glissvia / Short answer
Access your Mac from anywhere, without port forwarding
To reach a Mac from outside your network without opening router ports, put it on a private Tailscale network. Glissvia has Tailscale built into the app: sign in, pick your Mac, then log in with your Mac account. The iPhone or iPad does not need the separate Tailscale VPN app.
Set it up
- On the Mac, turn on Screen Sharing in System Settings → General → Sharing and allow your user account.
- Install Tailscale on the Mac and sign in.
- In Glissvia, sign in to Tailscale with the same network. Your administrator may need to approve the device.
- Select your Mac from the list and sign in with its short username and login password.
Why this route
- No router ports are opened, and no public IP or dynamic DNS is needed.
- Glissvia connects only to visible Mac peers at their own Tailscale addresses. It refuses public, local, loopback and subnet-route addresses on this route, and never falls back to a direct connection silently.
- Tailscale runs only while you use the remote desktop.
What to expect
The Mac must stay awake and online, and responsiveness depends on both networks. Tailscale handles sign-in and connectivity under its own privacy policy and pricing.
Common questions
Do I need port forwarding or a static IP?
No. Tailscale handles reachability between the devices.
Do I need a Tailscale account?
Yes, for this route. It is separate from Glissvia, which has no account of its own. On the same local network you do not need Tailscale at all.
Does it work on mobile data?
Tailscale is designed to work across networks, including mobile data and other Wi-Fi. Speed depends on the networks at both ends.
Can I use a self-hosted control server such as Headscale?
No. Self-hosted control servers are not supported.
